The cold winter months can cause uncertainty on our roads. In Saskatchewan, icy road conditions are an ongoing concern for residents during the winter months and occasionally force us to alter our driving plans. When travelling over the winter months, the Saskatchewan Safety Council would like to remind drivers to take caution when driving from destination to destination.

Everyone should take the time to phone family, friends or relatives before heading out and provide them with your driving route, as well as your estimated time of arrival. It’s very important to check weather and road conditions before heading out onto the road and always travel at a speed that is appropriate for the weather and road conditions.

Every vehicle should have a well equipped emergency kit, which includes the following items:

• Extra warm clothing for every person in the vehicle including jackets, mitts and toques (be sure to store these items in the vehicle with you and never in your trunk)

• Blanket

• Snow brush/ice scraper

• Shovel

• Sand or other traction aid

• Tow rope or chain

• Booster cables

• Warning lights

• Gas line antifreeze

• Flashlight and batteries

• First aid kit

• Fire extinguisher

• Small tool kit

• Candle and small tin can

• Matches

• Non-perishable foods (granola bars, chocolate, soup, juice, bottled water)

Lee Carlson has been a Senior Safety Program Instructor with the Saskatchewan Safety Council for over 10 years.  He is a former Training Coordinator with the Ministry of Highways and Transportation and brings over 30 years of knowledge and experience to many of the Council’s traffic related programs including Defensive Driving, SkidSmart, Trailering, 55 Alive, Driver Audits and Workzone to name a few.  He also contributes to the Council’s Annual Industrial Safety Seminar, presenting on topics such as safe winter driving and workzone safety.

It’s not what nitrogen is that makes it such a beneficial inflation medium, but what it is not. Nitrogen is an “inert” gas, which basically means it is “nothing”, completely free of any properties. Essentially, it is the nothing that oxygen is combined with in our atmosphere so we can breathe.

“Regular air,” the air that we breathe and compress to fill tires, is about 79.1% nitrogen and roughly 20% oxygen. While oxygen, again, is essential for us and almost every other living organism, it is detrimental to almost everything else. Think “oxidation.” Oxidation, also known as rust and corrosion, is the enemy of anything composed of rubber or steel. Without oxygen, it is impossible for oxidation to occur (i.e., no rim rust or corrosion, no TPMS sensor oxidization and no tire rot). Further, without the presence of oxygen (the “O” in H2O), water or condensation cannot form in a tire. Hence, no oxygen means no rust, no corrosion and no water or water related issues.

The greatest disadvantage of oxygen, however, is its molecular size. Air filled tires, as you might know, lose pressure at the rate of at least one psi per month through normal “permeation.” Nitrogen filled tires, on the other hand, typically lose NO pressure over a one month period. This is because the size of a molecule of oxygen, which again comprises about 20% of regular air, is roughly ¼ of the size of a molecule of nitrogen. Underinflated tires run warmer, wear out faster and increase rolling resistance, which wastes energy ( fuel), and nitrogen inflated tires stay properly inflated much longer.

A recent study from Clemson University indicates that oxygen free, or nitrogen inflated, tires can last up to 50% longer, provide up to 10% better fuel economy and fail much less frequently. Knowing these facts, no one can refute the value of keeping tires oxygen free.

Conclusion:

• No rust, rot, or corrosion to tires.
• No loss of pressure.
• Nitrogen is good.
• Nitrogen is NOT some snake oil scheme.

There are several trim levels offered as well: base S, upmarket SE, luxurious SEL, a separate Sport model, and a Hybrid.

Everyone knows value is high on the list of potential buyers. Perhaps then, it’s here that the Fusion delivers its greatest pop. Starting at $19,695, the 2010 Fusion comes with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. EPA estimates for fuel economy with that engine mated to the six-speed automatic lead the family sedan class with 22 city/34 highway.

That $19,695 price will get you a Fusion S model with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder, power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, 60/40 split rear seats, stylish 16-inch aluminum wheels.  Moving up to a preferable $21,225 SE trim will allow you tons more options (including Sync) along with standard Sirius satellite radio, nicer trim and awesome looking snowflake-style 17-inch alloys.

The $24,655 SEL four-cylinder Fusion makes the optional and preferable six-speed automatic standard all the while giving you dual-zone automatic climate control, steering wheel mounted audio controls, auto headlamps, an auto-dim rear view mirror, standard Sync connectivity, eight-way power front seats and leather upholstery. That’s a great deal for a stylish, reliable and fully loaded family sedan.

What’s not to like. Passenger room is ample with plenty of room for legs in the back seat even with a six-footer sitting behind another six-footer. The trunk is another strong point with the Fusion as 16.5 cubic feet ranks it as one of the largest in its class and the drive is as quiet as can be.

In closing, if you are looking for the practicality of a well-appointed, well-engineered and crisp-handling family-sized four-door that also offers a choice of fuel-efficient four-or six-cylinder engines and available all-wheel drive, the 2010 Ford Fusion merits serious consideration for a spot in your garage.

Fuel efficiency may not be top of mind with some Canadian drivers these days — with trucks once again outselling cars — but it is with Ford Motor Company officials.

The North American automaker has been on a bit of tear lately, introducing a whack of new models — eight this year alone — that are either the most fuel-efficient in their class, or on par with the most miserly.

Ford Canada president and CEO David Mondragon said in Winnipeg Friday gas prices are bound to rise again — he predicts oil will be back above $100 a barrel by 2012 or 2013. And when they do, demand for fuel-efficient cars and trucks will rise along with it.

That’s why Ford has invested so heavily over the last three years in developing smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles like the ones it has been producing for years for the fuel-conscious European and Asian markets. Its goal is to be a fuel-economy leader in every segment in which it competes.

The latest addition to its revamped lineup of North American fuel-sippers is the new Fiesta subcompact, which is being introduced to the Canadian market this month. It boasts a class-leading rating of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway, and 6.8 litres in the city.

Another is the Transit Connect compact van, which has been a big seller for years overseas, and is now available in North America.

Mondragon said Canada Post is buying 1,175 of the four-cylinder vans this year as it begins to replace its aging national fleet of cargo vans. Canada Post officials have said they chose the Transit Connect because it’s more fuel-efficient — 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.9 on the highway — and more environmentally friendly.

Mondragon was in Winnipeg to attend the grand opening of Canada Post’s $100-million mail-sorting plant, which will be getting some of the new vans.

He said car sales have taken a back seat to truck sales this year in Canada, with 53 per cent of the vehicles sold being trucks, and 47 per cent cars. Last year, it was the opposite.

But he predicts the preference will shift back to cars once gas prices start climbing again, even though today’s trucks are also a lot more fuel-efficient than they used to be.
