I was fortunate to attend the Regina Pat Canadians year end wind up banquet this year representing Capital Ford and the Capital Auto Mall. The Pat Canadians had a successful year and there was tons to celebrate. Even though the year didn’t wind up with a championship, or a trip to the playoffs, the Pat Canadians landed 5th in the standings and narrowly missed out on the playoffs after a tie breaker with Notre Dame to end the season.

Graham Black - Regina Pat Canadians

Graham Black in particular cleaned up the league awards with 3 league awards including MVP! He’s hoping to join the Swift Current Broncos after playing a few games up at the major junior league with them already this year. Selfishly I’m a huge Broncos fan so I hope he kills it!

The program was fun. It started out with an inspirational address from the WHL Regina Pats head coach Curtis Hunt who spoke about attitude and hard work being the cornerstone for all success in life, not just in hockey. As it was winding down the teams trainer, Doug McKell went through the classic gag gifts. Handing out an alarm clock for those who can’t keep time, dog treats for those in always in the coaches dog house, crazy glue for a player who leaks the most blood and a bunch of well intended, funny but heart felt gifts. You could really tell the connection between the players and their trainer was tight and had everyone in stitches.

You can really tell that this team, from the players, coaches and parents, are all in it for the right reasons. it was easy to feel the passion for the game and for the young men to be the best, not only in hockey but in everything they do. As a Regina Ford dealership it’s easy to be a proud sponsor of such a great organization and I’m sincerely looking forward to being at next years banquet as well!

Looks like it’s another year in the books! Our team here at Capital Ford wanted to send a warm Happy New Years to you and your family. With another year gone comes a new lineup of vehicles and new features for us to learn. It also means more training for our outstanding service staff to keep up with the latest technologies and to unofficially get their MD for 2011 vehicles. (stethoscope and all!)

Today’s vehicles are filled with features and technologies to help keep you safer – knowing how to use them properly can make you a better driver. Some features can help minimize injuries in crashes while others can help you avoid dangerous situations all together. MIT researchers say reducing stress can help us all be better drivers, go figure.. especially at this time of the year, which if you’re like me is the most stressful time of them all.

For new years we leaned on Ford Motor Company to give us a list of 10 New Years Resolutions to becoming a better driver, and while reducing stress isn’t on the top 10, i think it is for me.

For a better explanation of each, read on!

1. Click it – even when you’re not worried about a ticket. Always buckle that safety belt – no exceptions. In 2009 alone, the use of safety belts in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 12,700 lives in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Isn’t that statistic alone worth taking that extra two seconds to click on the belt when you travel – and make sure your passengers do, too? In case you do forget, however, you can bet your vehicle’s safety belt reminder systems won’t. Ford’s own BeltMinder™ system has been credited by NHTSA for increasing the buckle-up rate, based on a study done by Ford and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showing that safety belt usage increased five percent among drivers in vehicles with BeltMinder.

2. Keep your eyes on the road ― not on your cell phone. Avoid unnecessary distractions. According to a 100-car study conducted by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, driver inattention that may involve looking away from the road for more than a few seconds is a factor in nearly 80 percent of accidents. That means no texting – no message is that important!

3. Read a good book – like your owners’ manual. You know the one; it’s been languishing in your glove compartment. Reading through it will give you some valuable safety information and could even save you some money. For instance, Ford owners might be surprised to find out they don’t need those oil changes every 3,000 miles like they used to. Many new Ford models allow 10,000 miles between oil changes.

4. Scrape that ice, ice baby! On wintry mornings, don’t be one of those people trying to negotiate the roads peering through a tiny hole of visibility in the windshield. That’s just plain dangerous. Leave an additional 5-10 minutes of time in the morning to scrape the snow and ice from your car and give your defroster a chance to do its job.

5. Find out how technology is working to keep you safer. Today’s vehicles are equipped with state-of-the-art technology that can help keep you safer – but it always helps if drivers better understand these features. Take your anti-lock-brake system, for example. Many of us grew up being told to pump the brakes when we hit a patch of ice. That’s not the right technique with four-wheel ABS technology. With ABS, pumping the brakes turns the anti-lock brake system on and off, which decreases braking efficiency and increases your stopping distance. ABS pumps the brakes automatically at a much faster rate than you could do it manually and allows better steering control.

6. Learn how to parallel park – or buy a car that does it for you. Many of us dread the experience of learning to parallel park. Even after years of driving, some still hesitate, faced with the prospect of blocking traffic while negotiating our way into a street-side space. Ford collaborated on a nine-month research project with the MIT New England University Transportation Center that evaluated stressful driving activities – and parallel parking ranked highest. So let this year be the year you master the art of parallel parking – or let technology help. Ford is equipping more vehicles with its innovative Active Park Assist technology – even the new Focus, making it the first vehicle in its class with this new technology. The system uses an ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) to position the vehicle for parallel parking, calculate the optimal steering angle and quickly steer the vehicle into a parking spot. It eliminates much of the stress. And MIT researchers say reducing stress can make us better drivers.

7. Listen to your mother – sit up straight. Make sure your seat and headrest are adjusted correctly in your vehicle to give you the optimum support. Your legs shouldn’t be overstretched to reach the pedals; you should be able to glance up and out at your mirrors with ease.

8. Check your pressure on all four tires – and the spare. Don’t confuse the “maximum tire pressure” written on the sidewall of the tire with the “recommended tire pressure” provided by the manufacturer – that’s found in that handy owner’s manual you’ve resolved to read and on a sticker conveniently located on the driver’s side door jamb. Also, show your spare you care by storing it in the trunk, where it will return the favor by getting you out of a jam should one of your tires spring a leak.

9. Take a cue from the Boy Scouts ― Be Prepared. You never know what cold weather will bring, so make sure you’re carrying the essentials in case you get stuck or stranded. We recommend your list include water, blankets, granola bars or beef jerky, a few road flares, a good flashlight (and extra batteries), jumper cables, and a bag of kitty litter for traction if you’re stuck in snow.

10. 4, 3, 2 … If you’re counting down to the New Year – stop right here. Remember the two-second rule. The vehicle in front of you should be passing a road marker two seconds before you to assure you’re not tailgating. Some drivers’ manuals even recommend a three-second rule. Remember, the New Year’s goal is to get acquainted with YOUR car, not the one in front of you!

Well there you have it! 10 resolutions to becoming a better driver in the New Years, hopefully one or two you can put to use right away! Stay well in the New Years!

It’s that almost time of year again – when the snow starts to fall, many drivers and their vehicles may not be prepared to drive on wet or icy winter roads. To stay safe, there are several things to remember. Bringing awareness early to prevent the consequences of poor winter driving is important.

On Thursday, October 14th, Capital Ford teamed up with the Sask Safety Council for a winter driving clinic to do just that. The media conference and free inspections that followed we’re well received and attendance was impressive. For a quick peek at the day check out this video!

6 Tips to Staying Safe This Winter

Capital Ford Lincoln, The Sask Safety Council and Ford Canada are pleased to provide the following tips on how to be ready for winter conditions to avoid getting stuck out in the cold. Read on for those tips!

1. Vehicle maintenance: Vehicles that have been regularly maintained according to their manufacturers required maintenance schedule should be ready for winter weather. If not, a visit to the local dealership to “catch up” on your required maintenance will ensure the vehicle is ready for the season.

2. Read your owner’s manual: All vehicles have different characteristics that will react to winter weather differently. This is a good time to check the manual for your particular vehicle’s winter driving tips.

3. Monitor tire wear: There are three important aspects when it comes to tires: pressure, tread wear and age.

• Tire pressure: Cold weather causes tires to lose pressure and become under-inflated; meaning your safety on the road is compromised. Check your tire pressure regularly, especially when the temperature changes.

• Tire tread depth: Proper tread depth can be key to slipping less and gripping the road better.

• Tire age: Old tires can be unsafe tires, especially in the winter. It is recommended that tires over six years old be replaced.

• All season and summer tires begin to lose their grip around 7 degrees Celsius. Consider switching to winter tires for better handling and braking performance.

4. Drive safely and be alert: Safe driving is always important. Remember to slow down and leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Also, avoid abrupt moves – don’t stop, start, or change direction suddenly and you’ll maintain better control of your vehicle in inclement conditions.

5. Goodbye cruise control: Never use the speed control in slippery conditions. If the weather suddenly becomes hazardous while cruise control is engaged, simply disengage it manually or lightly tap the brakes.

6. Get to know the safety feature alphabet: Become more familiar with vehicle safety features such as ABS, TC, ESC and RSC, to understand how they can help.

• Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): Vehicles equipped with an anti-lock braking system do not require the driver to pump the brakes in slippery conditions when hard braking is required. Apply firm, continuous pressure on the brake pedal and ABS may activate to help you maintain control of the vehicle.

• Traction Control (TC): This feature most often engages at low speeds. In the majority of winter driving conditions, it is best to keep the traction control feature ON. However, in extreme conditions – for instance, deep snow or sheer ice – it may be better to turn OFF your traction control to get moving.

• Electronic Stability Control (ESC): ESC helps prevent your vehicle from skidding out or sliding laterally in slippery conditions.

• Roll Stability Control™ (RSC®): AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™ helps to avoid a rollover in a collision situation.

So as we enter “Winter 2010″ at Capital Ford we wish everyone safe driving.

I don’t know about you but I like the over the top, outrageously energetic and sometimes obnoxious Jim Cramer. He’s the man who’s always very demonstrative and creative in his delivery of financial recommendations. There’s no doubting why his program is called “Mad Money.” Jim has a great feel for Ford and has been an advocate of FoMoCo. When CEO Alan Mulally introduced Jim to the new Ford Explorer it was madness!

With the recent good fortune at Ford, it was a treat to see Mulally, the impressive leader of Ford, interviewed by Kramer, the crazy economist. At the heart of the new upturn at Ford is the production of outstanding vehicles. We’re awfully proud to offer one of the best lineups Canada has ever laid eyes at our Regina Ford dealership. It’s been a big turn around since 06′ when Mulally took over, and personally I think Mulally has brought a tenacity and greatness that all other car manufacturers lack. I hope this post is more then just my own personal interest coming across but I thought this video was a fun and insightful. It’s a great look at how bright the future is, and how great it is right now. Above all else, if you haven’t seen Alan Mulally before, this is a great look at the man who’s steering the ship, and how down to earth and fun he is. He seems like he’d be a helluva Riders fan!

As I wrote about the new ecoboost V6 for the 2011 Ford F-150 I couldn’t help but be blown away as I dug into some Ford resources. The power and torque numbers out of a V6 (at least I thought) are almost unbelievable. It’s that impressive. The more I thought about it, the same questions begged to be asked. How is a V6 supposed to produce this much power and torque without blowing itself up. So I dug in a little deeper to answer, is this new engine going to be reliable? Want to know what I found? Keep on reading baby!

An all-new engine

Every Ford truck engine undergoes a tortuous testing program, and the EcoBoost truck engine was no exception.

“We’re testing this EcoBoost truck engine just as we would all of our other F-150 truck engines – we have exactly the same expectations and it has to pass all our truck durability and reliability tests,” said Kris Norman, powertrain operations manager. “From our standpoint, this is an all-new engine specifically designed and engineered for the F-150. Everything is validated to the higher stress levels and higher customer usage levels found in any F-150 engine.”

Three avenues that test and validate engines are computer analysis, laboratory testing and in-vehicle validation. For the 3.5-liter EcoBoost application in the 2011 F-150, that includes:

More than 1.5 million hours of analytical time

More than 13,000 hours of dynamometer testing, including more than 5,000 hours at full boost and more than 2,500 hours at or above 5,000 rpm; the dyno testing helps ensure durability in excess of 150,000 miles

More than 100,000 hours of vehicle test time encompassing the full range of potential customer operating conditions

All the tests together replicate more than 1.6 million miles of customer usage – the harshest-use customer. A customer profile reflecting extreme-use driving style, road types and vehicle usage, including maximum towing and payload situations, was developed to underpin the testing program.

The computer modeling and system analysis especially have been key.

“Instead of constantly building and testing parts, we want to be smarter and use our computer skills and our ability to model things to do the upfront work,” Norman said. “We want to get everything right at the start, then validate with extensive testing.”

Turning up the heat

Engineers put the 3.5-liter EcoBoost truck engine on an extreme, accelerated pace. The thermal cycling test, for example, replicated conditions from the Arctic Circle to Death Valley to simulate 10 years of use in the harshest environments.

“On a thermal cycling test, for example, we want the engine to get hot as fast as possible, so the best way to do that is to go full boost at high speed,” Norman said. “To test the structure of the engine, we run it at full boost with maximum load. We run thousands of hours at full boost – conditions not attainable in a real-drive situation but important for proving this F-150 is ready to go the distance.”

The 2011 F-150 with EcoBoost will be available in early 2011.

I don’t know about you but when I heard of a V6 in the F-150 and how many they wanted to get into our Regina Ford dealership I was, well pretty much a Debby Downer. That is, UNTIL, I did a little research in the new engine and what it has to offer. My ignorance took a hay-maker to the chops. Keep on reading to learn all about it.

Cutting right to the chase, with the new 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine, the 2011 Ford F-150 will deliver best-in-class towing capability and torque with outstanding fuel economy. That make sense right, that’s likely why a person would consider a V6, for outstanding fuel economy but as truck buyers in Saskatchewan tell us every day, they need a truck that can work. The torque and tow capacity of the new V6, compared to any other V6 available is off the charts. So to our customers looking for a work truck, yeah you may be used to needing a big engine and go with a V8 but V6 is ridiculous. (You’ll crap when you get down to the numbers… I don’t know how to put it anyway else.) Give it some serious consideration when you call, send in an online request or come in and ask about our trucks. If you need a truck that will work, Capital Ford answers the call!

“Customers have embraced the EcoBoost solution of delivering the power they desire with the fuel economy they demand in a no-compromise package . . . From the start, we have pledged that this solution applies to any engine and any customer. The EcoBoost truck engine for the 2011 F-150 will deliver those attributes and has been specially tuned and tested to deliver the best-in-class towing and capability our truck customers demand.”
Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development.

The key technology built into every EcoBoost engine, including turbocharging and direct fuel injection, is particularly relevant to customers of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost truck engine.

This combination of turbocharging and direct fuel injection delivers a wealth of low-end torque and maintains it across a broad rpm range, which is key in towing applications. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost truck engine delivers 420 lb.-ft. of torque and 365 horsepower to enable best-in-class towing of 11,300 pounds – more than enough to tow a fully loaded three-horse trailer or 30-foot boat, for example. Plus the EcoBoost truck engine does it all on regular fuel and with outstanding fuel economy. I have to stop and give a

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!

“Truck customers should think of the EcoBoost truck engine as a gas-powered engine with diesel-type capability and characteristics,” said Jim Mazuchowski, V6 engines program manager. “The twin turbochargers and direct injection give it the broad, flat torque curve that makes towing with a diesel so effortless – and hard acceleration so much fun.”

Up to 90 percent of the EcoBoost truck engine’s peak torque is available from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm. A typical comparable V8 competitor reaches peak torque at higher engine speeds – around 4,000 rpm – and holds it for a much smaller range.

“This is good news for customers because the combination of reaching peak torque at a lower engine speed, and maintaining that torque for a longer period, brings new levels of fuel efficiency with maximum towing capability other competitors can’t match,” said Mazuchowski.

This EcoBoost truck engine also features twin independent variable camshaft timing, or Ti-VCT, to help save fuel. Ti-VCT provides extremely precise variable – yet independent – control of timing for intake and exhaust valves. Ti-VCT also reduces emissions, especially in situations when the throttle is partially open.

Independent adjustment of intake and exhaust valve timing allows maximum fuel economy at part-throttle, while delivering optimized power in full-throttle situations. An added benefit is improved driveability and responsiveness across the torque curve.

So V6 Fuel economy and big daddy diesel characteristics, it sounds awfully good. I can’t wait until we have the opportunity to test it’s mettle! Want some information, why not visit our Capital Ford website and send in a request?

We had a blast at Summer Invasion this year and this commecial was really one of the highlights for us. It had SOOOO many people asking questions, commenting and giving props to a great video. Props go out to the great folks at Living Sky Media for putting it together for us!

We’re also please to announce, and exciting about a partnership with Grassroots Wakeboard School. They offer camps all summer and this isn’t exactly the best time to be promoting them but it ties in well with the video and it’s a something we’re really excited about pushing forward with. If this peaks your interest right off the hop let us know in the comments, otherwise watch our blog over the next few months for our master plan.

In the mean time, if you’re looking for a truck to pull your boat, you need something as tough as the F-150. We’ve recently put together a stand along website for the new F-150 in Regina for our shoppers.
