The 2012 Focus offers a handful of new, innovative safety features, including Ford’s next generation driver front airbags with enhanced chest protection technology.  This reconfigured curve-shaped tether system pulls in the lower section to create a “pocket” to help lessen the impact of the airbag on the driver’s chest and ribs in frontal crashes.  Also, the new side airbags feature unique shoulder vents that stay open and reduce pressure for smaller occupants who typically benefit from reduced forces. Taller occupants whose shoulders block the vent could benefit from the higher pressures.  Ford also offers the first ever front passenger airbags with adaptive venting technology to enhance head and neck protection by better matching deployment force with occupant size.

In addition to the 2012 Focus’ airbags, it also offers a number of other safety features.  The Advancetrac Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with anti-lock brakes constantly monitors road conditions and the driver’s responses, then adjusts the engine power and applies the ABS brakes to ensure the wheels remain firmly planted.  The boron steel used for the body structure fortifies it and makes it four times stronger than normal high-strength steel to protect the driver and passenger while reducing weight of the vehicle.  Also available is the MyKey technology that is designed to allow owners to designate a key that will operate with special features.  For example the volume and speed can be adjusted so that if another person is using your vehicle, they have to drive using your settings.  The SOS post crash alert system protects you and other drivers on the road by automatically turing the vehicle’s horn and emergency flashers in the event of an airbag deployment.

With the recent good fortune at Ford, it was a treat to see Mulally, the impressive leader of Ford, interviewed by Kramer, the crazy economist. I hope this post is more then just my own personal interest coming across but I thought this video was a fun and insightful. It’s a great look at how bright the future is, and how great it is right now.  Above all else, if you haven’t seen Alan Mulally before, this is a great look at the man who’s steering the ship, and how down to earth and fun he is. He seems like he’d be a helluva Riders fan!
