Carroll Shelby is an American Racing Legend who was one of the nation’s longest living heart transplant recipient’s and unfortunately passed away this past week on May 10, 2012.

Carroll Shelby was born on January 11, 1923 in Leesburg Texas. He got married at the young age of 20 and fell in love with racing cars. His first race was a quarter mile drag meet behind the wheel of a hotrod fitted with a flathead Ford. All throughout the 1950′s Carroll continued to race and he won dozens of races in various classes and was twice named Sports Illustrated’s Driver of the Year.

In 1961 he opened up the Shelby School of High Performance Driving at Riverside Raceway. After learning that AC Cars in England has lost its source for engines for its two-seat roadster, Shelby proposed the company keep building the chassis for a special Shelby sports car to be powered by an American V8. His idea was a hit and Carroll Shelby is now one of the most famous auto racer and car designers in America!

Edsel B. Ford, a member of Ford’s board of directors, said Friday in a statement that the company had lost a legend.

“Carroll Shelby is one of the most recognized names in performance car history, and he’s been successful at everything he’s done,” Ford said. “Whether helping Ford dominate the 1960s racing scene or building some of the most famous Mustangs, his enthusiasm and passion for great automobiles over six decades has truly inspired everyone who worked with him.”

Carroll Shelby was more than just a famous vehicle designer, but he also cared for the community. The Carroll Shelby Foundation was created in 1991 to provide assistance for children and young people needing acute coronary and kidney care. According to its website, the foundation has helped numerous children get surgery, as well as provided money for research.

Carroll Shelby has made a large impact in Ford history and will truly be missed.

Guess what today is?! It’s National Siblings Day!

Today is a day that you appreciate all those brothers and sisters that you have. Whether its one, two, ten or twenty-one, this is a day where you celebrate your partner’s in crime through all those family vacations and childhood events.

A bond with a brother and/or sister is something that is unexplainable. There’s nothing else like it. Although you may have had your ups and downs, siblings make the best friends and more importantly, family. The best part is you can yell, pinch, hit, and pull each other’s hair one minute and be hugging and hanging out the next. Did I mention they also make the best roommates? You don’t need to feel bad about nagging one another to do the dishes or vacuum the floor. If they still are being lazy and not pulling their weight around the house then you can be straight up and blunt by saying “Get your Lazy you know what off the couch and help me!” They won’t even be offended, I promise! Siblings are always there for you too.. so you can blame them for breaking the lamp on the coffee table. Even though you were doing back flips off the couch and hit it with your foot, it’s still your siblings fault.

Brother’s and sisters can also make the best partner’s in crime. Now I myself am in a family of three children. My brother Adam and I are only a year apart so we teamed up and pulled all sorts of pranks on my little brother Jared, who is 4 years younger than me. Many years ago we tied up his legs and arms, put a gag in his mouth and put our mother’s old 1980′s bikini on him and locked him in the pitch black basement all by himself! I still laugh about it it to this day, and he probably forgave us about 5 minutes after it happened. Now that’s what I call sibling love!

Happy Siblings Day! If you see or talk to your siblings today, honour, recognize and celebrate one another!

Bruce Axelson, president of the Capital Auto Group and Irv Lazorko, product specialist at Capital Ford Lincoln posed for a few photos together in celebration of their third year in a row to receive an award! Bruce received his third Retailer of the Year award, while Irv received his third Product Specialist of the Year award for 2011!

Bruce Axelson received an award for Capital GMC Buick Cadillac with two components, one for sales of Optimum used cars and another for combined sales of new and used vehicles – from Glenn Lemmerick, GM Canada’s western regional manager. Irvin Lazorko received the award for Capital Ford’s Product Specialist of the Year 2011. This is also his third award in a row! This award is given to the product specialist with the top total new and used vehicle sales combined.

These two gentlemen have been in the car business for a combined total of 80 years. They are both extremely outstanding individuals that are dedicated and passionate towards the automotive industry and are always willing to lend a hand. On behalf of Bruce and Irv I would like to thank all of our customers for your loyalty and ongoing support. We look forward to welcoming any new customers and seeing previous customers in the future!

Kurtis McGonigal has worked at Capital Ford for a little over two years now and achieved top salesmen of the month for March, as well as used car salesmen of the month for March!

Kurtis was born in Brandon, Manitoba and raised in Moosomin, Saskatchewan. He moved to Regina in July of 2009 and shortly after decided to come work at Capital Ford. His favourite Ford vehicle is the Mustang and he currently drives a 2007 Roush. Kurtis enjoys playing sports such as basketball and going to the gym in his spare time. Chicken and rice is his favourite meal and if he could travel one place in the world that he’s never been before would be Ireland because his great grandfather is originally from there. When asked what his favourite type of music is he stated it’s a toss up between rock and house.

Kurtis enjoys working at Capital Ford because of the non-commission sales base. He can come to work in a comfortable environment and be open and honest with his customers since his motivation does not resolve around money. Kurtis enjoys coming to work so he can help people find the perfect vehicle to suit their needs and lifestyle. In addition, he has developed some strong friendships with people at the dealership and enjoys seeing them every day. When I asked Kurtis where he sees himself in 10 years he said he hopes to be a sales manager at Capital Ford. He would like the chance to give someone else the opportunity he has received from Capital Ford and looks forward to helping his team grow and teaching them everything he knows about the automotive industry.

Kurtis is excited about currently holding the top total sales for the entire year at Capital Ford and is looking forward to serving new clients this year!

On Tuesday March 21 and Wednesday March 22, a crew of Capital Ford salesmen, marketing employees, Internet Sales and Service employees made their way down to the Brandt Centre for Ford’s Ride & Drive!

Ride & Drive is a fun filled day of product knowledge and information about new and upcoming vehicles. We were split into groups and went from session to session..two of the sessions included test drives! The first test drive round for my group involved us driving various electric and hybrid cars. In my opinion, the new 2013 Ford Taurus and 2012 Ford Focus Electric was featured in this line-up. The Taurus was by far one of the nicest vehicles, as well as the Chrysler 300.

The second round of test drives included a sneak peak of the brand new 2013 Ford Escape! Now as an Escape owner myself, this was an unreal experience for me. The seats were more comfy than ever, the interior was absolutely gorgeous and classy, and the handling of the vehicle was unbelievable. I didn’t want to take my Escape home!

The test drive didn’t include a nice easy drive in the park, we were told to put the pedal to the metal and went through an obstacle course including sharp turns and bumpy surfaces. A little hesitant at first, the first run through for me was somewhat gentle, until I slowly eased into it and ended up hitting pilons!

According to Brian Churko, “The Escape is unbelievable, it handles so well, so unreal, tons of power.” Brian adds, “I didn’t hit the wall in the back seat when driving through the course compared to the Toyota Rav 4!”

When I asked Craig Livingston to describe the new Escape in three words he said “comfy, vastly improved, and going to be the best vehicle in it’s class by far”… although this was more than three words, I’ll take it! I don’t think it’s possible to sum up the Escape in three words!

The Ford Escape was the number one selling compact SUV in Canada with over 45,000 sales last year, while the second place vehicle, the Honda CRV, only had 25,000 sales last year.

The Ride & Drive also included informative information about the new 2013 Lincoln lineup. The sleek and sophisticated design was made keeping our customers in mind. Bernie Hernando stated “I’m looking forward to the Lincoln MKZ, I’m so excited to see what Lincoln brings out next year!”

By the sounds of things, everyone of us thoroughly enjoyed our time at Ride and Drive and can’t wait to go back next year!

Why do we need leap years? So that our calendars are in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun.. duh!!

Did you know that since our calendar has exactly 365 days in a year, we would lose almost six hours from our calendar every year if we did not add February 29th to every 4th year?! Since a leap year only occurs every 4 years (or 1,460 days), those that are born on it may face many advantages as well as obstacles:

The chances of being born on a leap day is 1 in 1,461 and only 4 million people in the world were born on February 29th.

There are a variety of leap years around the world. For instance, the Chinese leap year has 13 months, with a leap month added about every 3 years. The name of the leap month is the same as previous lunar months. The Chinese leap month is calculated by the number of new moons between the 11th month in one year and the 11th month in the following year. A leap month is inserted if there are 13 moons from the start of the 11th month in the first year to the start of the 11th month in the next year.

The Jewish calendar has 13 months in a leap year. There are 29 or 30 days in each month in a Jewish leap year, which has 383, 384 or 385 days. The extra month is called “Adar” and according to Jewish tradition it is seen as a lucky and happy month. A Jewish leap year occurs 7 times in a 19 year cycle. The 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 19th years are a leap year in this cycle.

Today only comes once in four years, so make today, February 29th a memorable one. Take that extra LEAP… Happy Leap Year everyone from your friends at Capital Ford!

Working at Capital Ford Lincoln isn’t just a job for Ryan it’s a career. In five to ten years Ryan hopes to still be working for Capital and would love to have his own sales team! Ryan enjoys seeing the smile and satisfaction on the customers faces when he finds a vehicle that best suits them. He finds the most important quality to have in the car business is product knowledge and good listening skills. He loves the Ford product, the facility, and the people he works with.

One of Ryan’s best qualities is his charm, but if he could have any super power he would chose to be able to fly! His favorite Ford Vehicle is the 1993 Mustang GT, although he drives a “pimped” out 2012 Ford Flex Titanium Eco-boost Awd, it’s lowered, with 20 inch wheels, window tint, and after market exhaust! If you want your ride blinged out Ryan is definitely your guy to ask! Ryan’s favorite place to be is Las Vegas, if you have a few hours I’m sure he could tell you a story or two, or maybe 10…..

Once again congratulations Ryan Brecht on achieving the Triple Crown Achievement award and the Top Used Sales award! Ryan is sure to create a no stress environment during your vehicle shopping process.
