How To Buy A Used Car

Many years ago buying a used car was often compared to buying “someone else’s problems.” but with cars being built to last longer, that’s not necessarily the case any more. What is important though is that you understand some basic principles in your search for a used vehicle.

1. Dealer vs Private

Although its tempting to buy privately or look for the cheapest car or “best deal” your goal needs to be finding a car in good condition for a reasonable price. Many times these private or best deal cars will most likely need some repairs that may cost you another few hundred or maybe even thousands of dollars and may cost you down time. These cars are cheaper but have been often less well maintained.

As a word of advice – avoid dealing with these so called “deals” unless your confident with the personsusedDealerbackground and there’s a detailed history of the vehicle.

2. The real deal behind “Certified” Used Vehicles vs Private Deals

Dealer certified vehicles are gaining popularity with consumers because certified used vehicles go through a rigorous inspection and repair which makes them more reliable in the long run. With most certified used programs, and as is the case with Capital Ford’s shining star certified used vehicles, the vehicles are thoroughly inspected. Our Shining Star inspections are done by qualified technicians who go through 150 point inspection. Our dealer inspected vehicles add $1,000 to $1,500 more value to the price of the vehicle but are well worth the investment down the line. Privately all you have is someone’s word. Now a days that’s a risky investment.

3. “What about warranty?” Dealer vehicles vs. Private

inspectionCertified used vehicles often have or qualify for after market warranties. Our shining star used certification program protects you with peace of mind as it comes with a 3 month 5,000 kilometer power train warranty. The list is lengthy, from your engine to your transmission and all front or rear wheel drive components are covered under our shining star used vehicle certification program. Used car warranties use to be viewed as a wasted of money but with today’s shop rates they are well worth the investment and the worry free driving it provides.

You may pay more for the a certified car, but you get more  for your money, taking the worry out of used car shopping – plus it gives you long-term security.

4. Dealer Guarantee vs Private

When buying anything you want to feel the reassurance that the person you do business with stands behind their product. Our shining star certified used car guarantee to you is our 3 day or 500 kilometer return policy. If you don’t feel complete satisfaction, return it within the stated time frame & exchange it for the right vehicle for you. There are a few conditions but we’re always happy to explain every detail before any transaction Privately it’s “AS IS” so if you get a clunker or a lemon – you’re stuck with it.

Consumers bought over a million used vehicles from certified used car dealers and that number is rising yearly in tuff economic times. Don’t be fooled into looking for the cheapest car it’s hardly ever the best value. Look for a car that is in good condition for a reasonable price, from a dealer that is certified – In the long run you’ll be glad you did!

I found a few take aways from your article and have to admit I didn’t put enough stock in “certified” vehicles. I’ve purchased a “Shining Certified” truck from Capital and am really happy and impressed. Thanks for the tips John.
